BORDERER Lisa Thomson has praised the "crazy" support shown to Scotland Women after the side claimed the inaugural WXV2 tournament.

The Scots beat hosts South Africa, USA and Japan to claim the title.

And they received a hero's welcome when they arrived at Edinburgh Airport, which Thomson believes shows how far the game has come.

“It’s been pretty mental," she said. “We had spoke about it for weeks and we knew what we were going out there to try and do.

“And arriving back with people being there to welcome us, and it being so early, was absolutely crazy.

“The support meant so much especially since we were so far away from home.

“For people to come to the airport so early shows just how far we have come. There were kids there getting up at 5am before school. It means so much and hopefully we can get some more good times at home.

“To have achieved silverware and to have a trophy, the first one Scotland Women have won in 22 years, is pretty special.

“We love playing at home so hopefully this will give us some momentum going into the Six Nations."

Thomson – alongside fellow Borderers Chloe Rollie and Lana Skeldon – helped Scotland to a 31-17 victory over South Africa, following that up with a 24-14 win over USA.

The final match saw the Scots beat Japan 38-7, but the team had a nervous 24-hour wait to see whether that was enough to claim the trophy.

And when Italy failed to secure enough points against the USA, the women were crowned champions.

Despite their historic win, the Scots will not be rewarded promotion to the WXV1 pool as that was not on offer in this edition.

The 2024 Women’s Six Nations will kick off on March 23 with an away fixture against Wales.

Round two, which takes place over Easter weekend, sees Scotland host France.

They then host England in round three on April 13 before facing Italy in Rome a week later.

Scotland finish with another away game in Dublin against Ireland on April 27.

Thomson is back with the team GB7s squad and is currently preparing for the Dubai 7s which take place on December 2 and 3.

The draw has been made and GB7s are in Pool A alongside New Zealand, South Africa and Fiji.
