Cumbernauld Colts 1

Selkirk 2

SELKIRK’S survival in the Lowland League looks a whole lot more likely after a stunning win over Cumbernauld.

The victory was all the more remarkable as Ian Fergus’s team had two players sent off.

The new manager, who has only lost one of his seven games since arriving at Yarrow Park, was full of praise for his players.

Fergus told us: “We did so well to come away with the win as we played almost the whole second half with ten men.

“We kept our shape really well despite having players out of position and they only got a goal back in injury time.

“The players have shown a tremendous appetite since I came to this club and they don’t deserve anything other than the utmost praise.”

Selkirk arrived at Broadwood with only 14 players after morning call-offs from Kerr Scott and Jordan Hopkinson.

But the Souters’ makeshift starting line-up more than matched their hosts in the early stages.

Phil Addison had already gone close when he was tugged back inside the area on the quarter hour.

Captain Ricky Miller tucked away the spot kick for a deserved lead.

The return of James Harley to the visiting defence was welcome as he, along with Andrew Fleming, Murray Christie and Miller prevented any clear chances for the home team.

And the hard-working midfield of Ryan Sclater, Ross King , Unpha Korona and Fraser Neave, continually turned around play to provide Addison and Gary Nicholson with chances to extend he advantage.

On 27 minutes Addison raced onto a Korona through-ball to make it 2-0.

A booking for Korona just before the interval was followed by another yellow card on 51 minutes for an almost identical 50/50 type challenge.

Further problems for the visitors arrived before the hour as Fraser Neave was injured in a collision.

Nicholson also picked up a knock with substitutes Cal Sheridan and Michael Collin both deputising out of position.

Amos made a couple of good saves as Cumbernauld searched for a way back into the match.

He was finally beaten with a low shot in the 91st minute – and Addison’s questioning of a possible offside infringement led to him being red carded.

Manager Fergus added: “We don’t have the biggest squad so losing both Phil and Unpha for our next game through suspension make it even more difficult.”

Selkirk hope to have two new players signed ahead of the match with Edinburgh University.
