SCOTLAND'S stars of Twickenham were in Melrose on Saturday to provide a masterclass at the home of rugby sevens.

The Scots made history in May when they scored two tries in the final minute to beat South Africa and win their first World Series.

A total of ten of the players from the London Sevens final were in Melrose on Saturday morning to coach the latest generation of players.

And they were later joined by their wives and girlfriends for a pre-match function before the Melrose and Heriot's match.

Scotland sevens captain Scott Wight, who is a former Melrose player, said: "It's always great to come back to the Greenyards and to bring the London Sevens trophy with us makes it all the more special.

"The club had asked originally to come down on the Sunday to take the minis but we thought it would be better to move the sessions to the Saturday and make a day of it.

"As well as the coaching, we took part in a question and answer session - it was a really good day."

Scott has just returned from playing and coaching in Africa.

The 30-year-old spent a week in Rwanda assisting the Rwanda Olympic Committee with talent identification and specific sevens coaching workshops.

He also played for an invitational team at the Safari Sevens in Kenya.

Scott added: "Our head coach, Calum MacRae, wanted a few of us to get some game time so five of us played at the Safari Sevens. The other four flew home after the tournament and I stayed on to work in Rwanda for five days.

"I learned all about what the country has come through in the past 22 years and it is incredible to see where they are now.

"I really enjoyed my time in Rwanda."

Wight led Scotland to their first ever tournament win on the World Series circuit, when they defeated South Africa, 27-26.

He finished the season as his side's top points scorer, with a tally of 226 points, accumulated through eight tries and 93 conversions.

Scotland 7s head coach Calum MacRae said: "It's an important element of our squad's ethos that we use every chance to develop both professionally and personally and Rwanda was a golden opportunity for Scott."

Wight will again captain the Scotland Sevens squad, which includes Olympic silver medalist Mark Robertson, when they return to training on Monday ahead of the 2016/17 tournaments kicking off in Dubai at the start of December.

Following Saturday morning's coaching session with the Melrose youngsters, the Scottish players and their partners enjoyed a lunch in the Greenyards clubrooms, which was ably compared by former Melrose stalwart, Graeme Dodds.
