A RANGERS fan club leader has said placing parking restrictions near Ibrox stadium on matchdays could stop a fans actually attending games.

Glasgow City Council have laid out a proposal to commence parking controls on streets close to the football stadium in a bid to stop cars and vans clogging up the surrounding streets.

However, Craig Houston of the Club 1872 supporters club has said he sees little benefit in the plans.

He said: “There figures which show large numbers of fans make their way to home games by bus or the subway.

“But the vast majority of supporters use their cars to get to home games.

“This proposal would impact on a huge number of fans attending matches and, with the measures proposed within at least a couple miles radius, it will only move the problem further away.

“It will also raise an issue with fans who have mobility issues.

“It may have an impact on the elderly as well as disabled people actually being able to make the journey to the stadium from their cars.

“The benefit of this plan is very difficult to see.”

Off the back of the proposal made by Glasgow City Council there is set to be a “public engagement” event tomorrow.

The council have said that this is the public’s chance to look at the plans and ask council officers questions.

If the proposals are successful the measures would be implemented in August in time for next season.

The Club 1872 will have a member attending the event.

Houston, a director of the fan club, also added that this particular issue has received the highest response rate from its members.

“The number of responses the club has received from members out strips any other issue that supporters have raised issue with.

“The level of response of people raising concern against these plans has been very high.

The consultation period for this proposal ends on January 31.
