A rundown public space in Possilpark is to get a £150,000 transformation.

Work has started on the eight week project which will result in an attractive area for hosting events, socialising and recreation.

A new bandstand will form the centrepiece of a new performance and events space which will have picnic tables, seating and bins.

Other areas will be upgraded to enhance amenity and biodiversity and improve sightlines and public safety.

The existing large cobbled area will have some maintenance and repair work to spruce up the site's frontage to Balmore Road.

The project by the city council and Possil Thriving Places is the latest step in locally-led efforts to revitalise the Saracen Street environment and boost business and community confidence in the area.

Work this month will involve the removal of unsightly, overgrown shrubs and other clearing work.

From January until mid-February, new features, equipment and street furniture will be introduced to transform the area into an attractive community space.

George Redmond, the council's spokesman for jobs, business and investment, said: "This project will help continue the regeneration of Possilpark, creating a space that local people and families can look forward to using.

"The Possilpark Millennium Space will now become a tremendous asset for the local community."
