PUPILS at a Tweeddale school saw off stiff competition to be named European quiz winners.

Youngsters from Broughton Primary have been congratulated for taking the top prize at the Scottish Borders heat of the 2024 Euroquiz competition.

Organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET), the annual quiz is open to all primary six pupils from across Scotland who are questioned on a wide range of subjects including history, geography, sport, culture, languages, and the European Union.

This year’s event was delivered online via a link to a pre-recorded YouTube video with a virtual quizmaster and 21 Borders primary schools taking part.

Broughton faced stiff competition from other schools, with Melrose taking second place and St Boswells coming in third.

It was the highest scoring team and will represent Scottish Borders Council at the National Euroquiz Final at Scottish Parliament in June this year.

Councillor Leagh Douglas, SBC’s executive member for Education and lifelong learning, said: “This hugely popular and well contested annual event remains a tremendous example of the way in which children from all over the Borders can compete to experience learning in a fun and good-spirited way.

“The knowledge displayed by all these young people was considerable and they are each to be commended, both for their individual and team contributions.

“Many congratulations to Broughton Primary and to Melrose and St Boswells for their valiant effort and well done to all our schools who took part.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Broughton all the very best as they go forward to the national finals in June, where I have no doubt, they will represent the Borders to the best of their ability.”
