A FORMER councillor who admitted careless driving has been fined £750 and had his licence endorsed with seven penalty points.

David Paterson – who served Hawick on Scottish Borders Council before retiring in 2022 – was initially charged with dangerous driving at Selkirk Sheriff Court and due to go to trial.

But the 69-year-old, of Beaconsfield Terrace, Hawick, changed his plea to guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving by causing his vehicle to swerve on the road, drive in close proximity to other road users and enter a roundabout the wrong way.

The offence happened on the A7 between Hawick and Galashiels, Ettrick Terrace in Selkirk and on Abbotsford Road in Galashiels at the roundabout with Tweed Road on July 20.

A £40 victim surcharge was also imposed.
