A BORDERS student is well on her way to a career in healthcare after successfully completing an apprenticeship.

Former Galashiels Academy student Martyna Guziel completed her Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare while in S6.

Martyna, who was praised by staff on her work placement as well as her apprenticeship tutors, has now been named as a finalist in the Foundation Apprentice of the Year category at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards in recognition of her hard work.

In addition to the apprenticeship Martyna completed her Highers in Human Biology, Modern Studies and Art, and her responsibilities as Head Girl.

She had already sat Highers in chemistry, maths, English, and geography.

During her apprenticeship Martyna had the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge she gained through her studies - including the research she did on communication, safeguarding and health and safety - in a care setting.

Reflecting on her placement at Wilkie Gardens in Galashiels - a supported housing unit - Martyna said: “On my first day we did animal charades and I ended up on the floor, pretending to be a worm - the tenants were in fits of laughter.”

While working at Wilkie Gardens Martyna also helped to set up a series of interactive social activities for tenants, supporting them to develop, maintain and learn new skills.

Martyna was praised by colleagues and assessors for her not being afraid to ask questions and completing her coursework to an "exceptionally high standard".

Mandy Johnstone, extra care housing manager at Eildon, which operates Wilkie Gardens, said: “Martyna was an absolute pleasure – she communicated so well with all our tenants and facilitated the majority of activities on her own.

“She was always very enthusiastic, very approachable and quickly became a real asset to our staff team.”

Borders College tutor assessor for social services and healthcare Hannah Inglis added: “Martyna threw herself into what she was doing, and her college work was always completed to a very high standard.”

Now studying a degree in adult nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, Martyna is building on the skills she gained in her apprenticeship.

She said: "Doing the Foundation Apprenticeship helped me develop skills like creativity, teamwork, communication and empathy.

“My apprenticeship gave me practical experience, a real insight into caring roles and quickly helped me decide that nursing was the right career for me.”

The winner of the Foundation Apprentice of the Year category will be revealed during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which takes place from March 4-8.
