AN INSPIRATIONAL Borders-based amateur artist had much more than just a brush with nature in 2023 by capturing its beauty … 365 days of the year.

In a display of dedication to the natural world, Pete Carthy successfully documented the wonders of the outdoors every day of last year.

This was on top of his full-time job as a teacher and running Hawick-based social enterprise Instinctively Wild CIC.

The monumental achievement not only showcases Pete’s commitment to environmental appreciation but also serves as a testament to the power of daily observation.

From breathtaking landscapes to the intricate details of flora and fauna, Pete’s nature journal entries have captured the essence of each day’s unique beauty, often of around Romanno Bridge, West Linton, Fylde Coast, Liverpool/Sefton and other places too.

The nature journals, filled with vivid descriptions and watercolour paintings, provide an intimate glimpse into the daily rhythm of the natural world as experienced by Pete.

This project not only highlights the diversity of our planet’s ecosystems but also serves as an inspiration for others to connect with nature on a deeper level.

Pete was asked to write a blog for the International Nature Journalling Week website, available at www.naturejournalingweek.com/blogs/nature-journal-day-127-7th-may

Pete said: “I am not an artist in that I haven’t done training at an art college. I hadn’t picked up a paint brush in 20 years. I just thought I would give it a go. I love nature, being out in it, walking, mountain biking, running, Forest Church, I’m in it often with both my jobs.

“Nature journalling is my time – I need it for myself, and I have absolutely loved it. Needless to say, I am going to continue into 2024 and beyond.”

In an era where digital distractions often take precedence, Pete’s dedication to the tangible and mindful practice of nature journalling stands out as a refreshing reminder of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the world around us.

Pete invites the public to follow him on Facebook at ‘Pete Carthy: Nature Inspired Photography and Print’.

He also posts daily on the Facebook group’s UK Nature Journaling and Nova Nature Journal Club.
