Craig Chalmers urges men to get tested for prostate cancer

The 55-year-old from Galashiels played 60 times for the Scotland and was also part of tours for the Barbarians and British & Irish Lions.

He also starred for Melrose, Borders Reivers, Edinburgh Rugby, Glasgow Warriors, Harlequins and Worcester Warriors.

He told followers on social media that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer just last week.

In the last seven days he has been going through extensive tests and scans and it's since been found that the cancer has not yet spread from the prostate.

Chalmers said he was only able to catch the cancer early because he went for a test as an over 50, as he had no symptoms.

And he called on fellow men to do the same.

He wrote on Twitter (now X.com): "It’s been a tough seven weeks going through all the PSA blood tests, MRI scans and biopsy. Sadly I found out on Wednesday I have prostate cancer but I have got it early and it’s contained in the prostate.

"My advice to men over 50 is to get tested asap as I had no symptoms."

The Scottish Rugby Union also sent its support. They wrote on Twitter: "Everyone at Scottish Rugby is behind you, Craig. Wishing you a speedy recovery."

The British and Irish Lions posted: "On behalf of everyone at the Lions, we’re all sending you our best wishes and supporting you Craig"

Fellow Scotland international Kenny Logan posted: ”Be strong big Man, loads of love”

Ex-Scotland international John Beattie posted: "Hello young lad. Thanks for posting, here’s to successful treatment."

Former British and Irish Lion Shane Byrne, said he has plans to go for a check up this week because the disease runs in his family.

He said: "Sorry to hear that buddy, hope the treatment is straightforward.

"I'm going in on Thursday for full checkup, it’s in the family so need check regularly! Take care man."

Ex-Scotland captain, Kelly Brown said: "Sorry to hear this mate. Great you’ve got it early, and I’ve no doubt you’ll smash the treatment."

Fellow ex-skipper Andy Nicol said: "Sending love and best wishes Chick."
