A SECOND charity rugby match is set to take place next month to pay tribute to a former Earlston player.

Stewart Ramsay tragically died in a crash on the A68 near St Boswells aged just 27 last year.

His death left parents Liz and Ally; girlfriend Steph Pender and children Grace, and Ava heartbroken.

And close pal and former teammate Mark Stewart, of Galashiels, organised last year’s event which also included a concert for the Denholm farm worker.

Mark was overwhelmed by the response and taken aback by the generosity of the spectators.

And he remains keen to make this an annual event as a legacy to Stewart.

He said: “last year we raised £7,500 which was divided equally between the charities Brake and Bloodbikes.

“The money was mainly raised from an auction however since so many people donated prizes last year I have decide not to ask them again so soon.

“So this year it’s mainly about remembering Stewart rather than raising money although we may have a 50/50 draw.

“The match will be free to enter and it will be followed by a disco and karaoke.

“The Rambo squad is coming along nicely and we have Robert Hogg and Martin Chisholm playing with Greg Ramsay coaching although a few players say that they are still sore from last year.

“Hopefully the weather will be better because last year it was very hot.

“But hopefully we get another good turn out.”
