A 22-year-old man has appeared from custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court accused of assaulting a police constable with his own incapacitant spray.
Ryan Williams is charged with grabbing the can from the officer during a struggle and then spraying him in the left eye at close range to his injury.
It follows a disturbance in the Lawfield Drive area of Ayton, Berwickshire, on Saturday.
Williams of Greenwood, Berwick-upon-Tweed pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He also denies charges of obstructing police and resisting arrest, driving with no insurance and possession of cannabis.
Williams was released on bail for his trial date on February 14 on condition he does not enter the Scottish Borders unless on court business or meeting his lawyer.
