A KELSO student has been selected to receive a £1,000 bursary from the Ryder Cup to help her gain experience in the events industry.

Lucy-Jane Robeson, who studies Events Management at Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh, is among five to receive the grant after Ryder Cup Europe made a commitment to the university to fund five tourism, hospitality and event students every year for four years.

And the 19-year-old says the award can help her develop her skills.

She told the Border Telegraph: "I’m very pleased and grateful to be a Ryder Cup Europe scholar for 2016.

"The award will help me to develop my knowledge and skills about the rapidly growing and multi-dimensional events industry.

"I am keen to gain work experience from the leaders in the field."

And the former pupil of Kelso High School says she will also use the financial support to help her attend international networking opportunities.

She added: "The bursary will allow me to network widely with a range of event management professionals and help me discover new opportunities that I might not otherwise have been able to explore."

Professor Joe Goldblatt, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Planned Events at Queen Margaret University, said: "The support offered by Ryder Cup Europe is making a significant impact on our students’ experience at university and their ability to take advantage of learning and life enhancing opportunities.

"We are delighted that the Ryder Cup Award is encouraging Lucy-Jane to gain international event management experience.

"An opportunity like this will undoubtedly have an impact on her employability, enhancing her future career possibilities."

And Ryder Cup bosses say they hope the grants can help inspire the next generation.

Richard Hills, Director of the Ryder Cup, said: "It was important that The 2014 Ryder Cup left a lasting educational legacy in Scotland and the aim of our bursary scheme was to help inspire a new generation of tourism and business leaders in Scotland and beyond.

"We’re thrilled to see this support continue and wish to congratulate Lucy-Jane on securing her bursary.

"We wish her all the very best with her future studies."
