AN ambitious bid to erect a lifesize sculpture of champion showjumper Scott Brash and his horse Hello Sanctos is approaching the finishing line.

Bonnie Peebles saddled up at the start of the year to create a lasting reminder in the town to one of the region's greatest ever sporting heroes.

Following a successful planning application, fundraising drive and commissioning exercise, work on the statue, made from recycled horseshoes, is nearing completion.

Members of the Bonnie Peebles group visited blacksmith and artist Kevin Paxton at his studio last week.

And they were left jumping for joy with what they found.

Avril Murray, co-ordinator with Bonnie Peebles, told us: "It certainly was a wow occasion and that was the horse only half way there.

"We were delighted with the work so far and look forward to seeing it again in the near future.

"Kevin and his lads are working hard and hope to have it finished by the end of the year."

Since the idea was first mooted several local organisations and companies have come forward with generous donations.

And the volunteers at Bonnie Peebles have continued with their own fundraising activities throughout the year.

Avril added: "Everyone who has sponsored a horseshoe, given a donation or helped in any other way should be very proud of themselves as this will be a great acknowledgement of Scott's many achievements and a beautiful piece of public art."

Brash climbed the world rankings steadily throughout his early 20s, but it was when he helped Team GB to Olympic Glory in London four years ago that he shot to the world's attention.

The 30-year-old's gone on to command the world's number one ranking - becoming the first rider to win show jumping's Rolex Grand Slam in a single year - and being honoured with an MBE for his achievements.

Although Bonnie Peebles are within touching distance of fully funding the sculpture, which will be lifted into place just off Edinburgh Road towards the end of the year, they are having one final push for funds next week.

The group, who also helped Peebles become Floral Gateway champion of champions, are hosting, appropriately enough, a Race Night in Peebles Rugby Club on Friday, October 28.

Stalls open at 7.30pm with the first race off at 8pm. Admission to the evening includes a light supper.
