ORGANISERS feared it would be a wash out, but despite Saturday's torrential downpours Clovenfords Summer Fair was a bigger success than ever.

Villagers came out in their hundreds armed with brollies and raincoats to take part in a whole host of fun-filled activities.

From climbing walls and races, to the fancy dress parade and and the great Cloven bake-off, there was certainly something for everyone.

There was also an extra special ceremony attended by Braw Lad Mark Hood and Braw Lass Alex Mundell - the official opening of the village play park.

Border Telegraph:

Ex-Clovenfords primary pupil Alex cut the ribbon to rapturous applause, before racing Mark towards the swings to see who could fly the highest.

Tweeddale Councillor Stuart Bell said: "It was great to see our local Braw Lass her Braw Lad cut the ribbon to officially open the refurbished Clovenfords Play Park.

"The Community Council, myself, and the other local councillors – Graham Garvie and Gavin Logan, have been frustrated that it has taken so long to complete this work - but last the job is done!

"The whole day was fantastic - my congratulations to the local team who organised such a great day of fun for our village."

One of the organisers, Sheila Turnbull, explained how the village's annual Gala Week died down around 12 years ago and there has always been a wish within the community to resurrect it.

"It was a real shame when the Clovenfords Gala Week fell apart and since then, we've always wanted to be able to bring back some sort of community event," she said.

"The demand was certainly there as shown by Saturday - I'm sure just about every person in the village came out to join in the fun, which was fantastic.

"We were so worried the night before when we saw the weather forecast - we thought 'oh no, nobody is going to turn up.'

"But we were thrilled to see so many people, from the young to the old, turn up. There was certainly no shortage of community spirit.

Border Telegraph:

"The Pipe Band started the Fair off beautifully, leading the whole village up to the official opening of the play park.

"We would like to thank all those who donated, helped and all those who attended to make the day a huge success, despite the weather.

"The Village Hall lent us their tents, as well as several gazebos brought along by people in the village, which saved the day!

"All the Summer Fair Committee were soaked through but extremely pleased that the day went so well and we have received nothing but positive comments about the whole event."
